White Whale Wednesday: My Pursuit of Elusive Coin Treasures
June 6, 2025Beware This BS Seller on eBay: My Coin Collector’s Alert
June 6, 2025There’s nothing like Terrific Token Thursday to get my heart racing! It’s become my favorite weekly ritual: digging through my collection and sharing the quirky, historic pieces that make this hobby so special. Tokens are wonderfully unique, each telling a story about local history or personal moments. Today, I’ve got a few favorites and stories I think you’ll enjoy.
Recent Additions and Condition Focus
This summer brought a fantastic addition to my collection: a token from the 1984 Canadian Numismatic Association convention in Hamilton. It arrived in near-perfect condition—what a find! As any collector knows, condition is king. I’ve made it a habit to look for pieces with sharp details and little wear. Another recent arrival was a doubled die token, a fun error that adds some spice to my collection. When grading, I always check the edges and surfaces carefully. A well-kept token like that convention piece can really hold its value, or even go up over the years.
Historical Highlights and Personal Favorites
Some of my favorite tokens are the old ones, especially Canadian pre-confederation pieces. Take the Habitant token: it shows a French-Canadian farmer in traditional winter gear—though I have to say, he doesn’t look dressed warmly enough for a Quebec winter! These “semi-regal” tokens had government approval and were used for more than 60 years. Flip one over and you’ll see heraldic flowers around the motto “Concordia Salus,” which means “Well-being through harmony.” That same phrase is still used by the Bank of Montreal today. I also love a worn 1837 Bank of Lower Canada token in my collection. It’s seen better days, but holding it feels like touching early Canadian history. Then there’s the quirky side: I’ve got 130-year-old cardboard tickets that a strawberry grower reused for pickers. For fragile items like these, I always use acid-free holders to keep them from falling apart.
Rarity, Market Trends and Authenticity Checks
Lately, I’ve seen tokens like the “Good for a Scent” variety shoot up in price as collectors snap them up—they’re red-hot right now. Then there’s the incredibly rare salamander token. Only about 15 are known to exist, so it’s a holy grail I’m still chasing. I haven’t found one yet, but I do have a lion press token that I’m proud of. One thing I’ve learned: always double-check authenticity. I got burned once with a reproduction Lillie’s Saloon token. Now, I’m extra careful about where I buy and I don’t hesitate to ask for expert help if something seems off.
Practical Collecting Tips
After years of collecting, I’ve picked up a few tips that might help you too:
- Condition matters: Tokens with clear details and little damage tend to hold their value better over time
- Celebrate the unusual: Oddball commemoratives or repurposed items (like those strawberry tickets) add real personality to a collection and are great for sharing stories
- Know what’s rare: Scarcity affects prices, so keep an eye on how many examples of a token are out there. That way, you’ll know when you’ve found something special
- Handle with kid gloves: Use gloves and protective sleeves for fragile pieces, especially paper or cardboard, to keep them from aging too fast
- Keep learning: Follow auctions and connect with dealers to stay in the know about what’s hot and what’s not
Terrific Token Thursday has reignited my passion for numismatics—it’s that thrill of the hunt and sharing the finds. I hope you’ll take some time to explore your own collection and uncover the stories behind each piece. Happy hunting!
