Rainbow, Bag, or Alchemy? A Grader’s Guide to Presidential-Dollar Toning and Eye Appeal
October 2, 2026For those looking to diversify a portfolio into hard assets, I believe numismatics offers distinctive opportunities, but I would approach any grading change with both enthusiasm and caution. PCGS’s new submission tiers and holder are not investments by themselves, and they cannot guarantee higher returns; they may, however, improve submission consistency, coin protection, and buyer confidence. In my experience, long-term numismatic value depends on much more than a slab or a grading announcement. I consider the coin’s mint condition, strike, luster, patina, eye appeal, and provenance, along with the strength of its rare variety and the liquidity of the market. A well-preserved coin with strong surfaces and an appealing design may attract sustained collector demand, while a less distinctive example can lose value despite an identical grade. My strategy is to buy selectively, evaluate the coin rather than the label, monitor grading and market trends, and avoid paying prices that depend on speculation. PCGS’s changes may support that process, but the coins themselves—and the prices paid for them—remain the foundation of any sound long-term coin investment strategy.
