July 12, 2025My Vacation Coin Shop Surprise
I was supposed to be relaxing on vacation, just taking my grandson to pick up a new Redbook and loupe at a local coin shop, when something stopped me in my tracks. An 1876 Trade Dollar practically shouted from across the room – I swear some coins just demand your attention. Graded ‘Unc. Detail, Cleaned’ by PCGS, I decided to make a game of it before heading home: my personal “Guess the Grade” challenge with this silver beauty.
Rollercoaster Grading Journey
After bringing it back to my rental, I spent hours getting acquainted with this coin. At first glance, I thought MS-64 seemed right – no obvious marks and that lovely luster hiding in the protected areas. But as I shifted it under different lights and snapped better photos, my opinion did a complete flip-flop.
- Subtle wear near the reeds on Liberty’s collar started jumping out at me, whispering “AU-58 maybe?”
- Then those cleaning marks in the fields became visible at certain angles – always a grade-killer when obvious
- But wait – in better lighting? Suddenly it looked medallic! Crisp details like the individual grains had me reconsidering MS-60 or better
What a lesson in how lighting and angles can completely transform a coin’s story. This is why I always check coins three different ways before settling on a grade.
Trade Dollar Wisdom I Picked Up
Playing with this 1876 beauty taught me some practical lessons I’ll share with fellow collectors:
- Original luster in protected recesses? That’s your best clue for mint state potential
- Check high points like reeds and collars religiously – even faint wear means AU territory
- Hunt for cleaning marks by rocking the coin under light – they love revealing themselves in open fields
- Never underestimate eye appeal! This cleaned coin still sings with its sharp details and presence
Why This Dollar Stole My Heart
That Trade Dollar became my perfect vacation souvenir – a coin I’d welcome into my collection regardless of its technical grade. It reminded me why I love this hobby: sometimes a coin just speaks to you, and that moment of connection turns an ordinary shop visit into treasure hunting. Whether you’re building sets or chasing precious metals, keep your eyes open and your loupe handy – adventure waits in the most unexpected places.
