Are These 1982 and 1941 Pennies Errors? My Numismatic Exploration
June 25, 2025My Journey with US Mint Subscriptions: Troubleshooting Tips for Collectors
June 25, 2025I’ve been on a real coin-buying streak lately and just had to share my newest treasures. Each piece, from classic commemoratives to eye-catching toners, feels like uncovering buried history. If you collect like I do, maybe these finds will spark ideas for your own collection goals.
My Latest Finds and Favorites
One recent standout is a Norfolk Commemorative with incredible luster – easily one of my favorite U.S. commemoratives now. That “wow” factor reminds me why I hunt these historical pieces. On the dime side, I picked up a Mercury dime through a group buy where fellow collectors helped me choose the best example – their advice paid off beautifully. I also found a half-dime and seated dime with the lovely toning I’d been searching for. Couldn’t resist adding a shield nickel in superb condition either. And while it’s not a coin, that 1972 Shirley Chisholm campaign button was too cool to pass up!
Practical Insights and Collecting Tips
Here are some things I’ve learned that might help your collecting:
- Buying Sprees: When you’re on a roll, set a budget first. Focus on coins that complete sets or grab your eye. Chatting with other collectors about choices often leads to better decisions.
- Grading and Slabs: Watch those slab details closely. I recently learned “H” in labels like “H10” means half-dime – suddenly older labels made sense! Remember that older NGC holders sometimes didn’t note full strike details like 5FS. If you’re moving coins to albums, you might discover hidden quality.
- Market Observations: Toned coins like those seated dimes are really popular now. Original surfaces with strong luster often mean better preservation – and more enjoyment.
- What to Look For: Always check surfaces and historical context. Pieces like my shield nickel or lustrous commemoratives tend to hold value well while making your collection more interesting.
This hobby truly comes down to patience and passion. Whether you collect silver, commemoratives, or oddities like campaign buttons, keep hunting. What have you added to your collection recently?
