Sometimes the unofficial money is more interesting than the official issues. Let’s explore the tokens and medals associated with this topic. As an exonumia collector, I have spent years navigating the fascinating world of emergency currency, merchant scritters, and the complex history of coin authentication. It is a hobby that often teaches us the most about a nation’s true economic health than its official mint records ever could.
Recently, a lively debate on a numismatic forum caught my eye. A user posted a photo of a Mercury dime accompanied by a “Certificate of Authenticity” bearing the copyright of 1992. The ensuing discussion quickly revealed a fundamental truth about numismatic collecting: the paper trail often matters far less than the physical object itself. As one astute forum participant noted, “actual coin collectors were not the target market here. There are two things that coin collectors will almost universally find to be very important about a coin they own, or want to buy: the date, and the mintmark (or lack thereof). And this ‘certificate’ does not mention either of those facts.” Another user chimed in, pointing out the absurdity of paying $1 plus shipping for a wrapped silver dime when the certificate claims a 1000% average increase in value based on a bullion price of 28 cents.
This forum exchange serves as a perfect microcosm for why exonumia—the study of tokens, medals, and related objects—remains such a vital and vibrant field. When we look beyond the official Mint issues, we find a parallel universe of “certification” and value that predates modern grading services like PCGS and NGC. Today, we will dive deep into the world of Hard Times tokens, Civil War tokens, merchant tokens, and the dark history of historical counterfeits, exploring how these unofficial monies shaped our economy and how collectors should evaluate them.
### The Pre-ANACS Era: Early “Certifications” and the Dexter Affidavit
In my experience grading and authenticating exonumia, the concept of a third-party grading service is relatively modern. Before the American Numological Association (ANA) formalized photo certification in the mid-20th century, how did we prove a coin was genuine? We relied on letters, affidavits, and the sheer weight of institutional authority.
The forum discussion highlighted a fascinating historical footnote: the 1887 affidavit by Mint Superintendent A. Loudon Snowden regarding the legendary Dexter 1804 dollar. Snowden was asked to swear under oath that the coin was authentic, and he did, despite knowing the coin had never actually been minted in 1804. This brings us to a crucial lesson in exonumia: “certification” has historically been a double-edged sword. While early Mint letters provided some level of authentication, they were often driven by political pressure, commerce, or simple ignorance.
When evaluating any piece of unofficial currency today, I always remind myself of this history. A piece of cardboard and plastic claiming to certify a coin does not hold the same weight as a sworn affidavit from a century past. The true value lies in the metal, the strike, and the historical context.
### Hard Times Tokens (1832–1834): America’s First “Certified” Emergency Money
If you want to understand the genesis of exonumia, you must look to the Hard Times tokens. During the economic panic of the late 1830s, the United States government refused to mint enough small change to keep the economy afloat. Enter the private sector. Thousands of private individuals, mostly local merchants, began striking bronze and copper tokens to fill the void.
These Hard Times tokens were the ultimate “unofficial money”—they were literally certified by local merchants as tender when the government had refused to issue them. In my collection, I have examined dozens of these, and their value lies not just in their scarcity, but in their historical significance as the first widespread use of emergency currency.
**Key Varieties and Grading Markers:**
* **Date Mintages:** The 1832 and 1833 issues are the most famous, but the 1834 issue also exists. The date is typically stamped prominently on the obverse.
* **Metallurgy:** Most are made of bronze (copper and tin) or copper. Silver High seated tokens exist but are exceedingly rare.
* **VAMs (Varieties, Attributes, and Characteristics):** Pay close attention to the reverse. Some 1832 tokens feature the “Half Cent” reverse, while others feature different reverses like the “Cot” or “Half Cent Reverse.” Die cracks, die polish lines, and die rust are highly sought after by advanced collectors.
* **Surface Preservation:** Because these were struck in large quantities, even well-circulated examples show significant wear. However, high points like the rim and the date remain sharp on uncirzed examples.
When buying Hard Times tokens, I always advise buyers to ignore the hype of aftermarket COAs and focus on the metallurgical composition and the sharpness of the obverse date. A well-struck, lightly circulated 1832 Hard Times token is a treasure trove of American economic history.
### Civil War Tokens (1863–1864): The Merchant’s Safety Net
Fast forward to the Civil War era, and we see another massive surge in unofficial currency. Copper was hoarded, cent denominations vanished from circulation, and again, private merchants stepped in to save the day. Enter the Civil War tokens.
These tokens were initially deemed illegal under the Token Coinage Act of 1864, but as the war dragged on and copper became scarce, Congress legalized them in 1864. They were struck in large numbers, featuring local merchants, patriotic slogans, and various denominations (usually 1¢ to 5¢).
As an exonumia collector, I find Civil War tokens incredibly rewarding because they represent a unique intersection of commerce and patriotism. They were not just trade tools; they were local advertisements and expressions of loyalty to the Union.
**Key Varieties and Grading Markers:**
* **Categories:** There are two main categories—Store Tokens (which advertise a business) and Patriacal Tokens (which feature patriotic imagery like the Stat of Liberty or Lady Liberty).
* **Obverse Design:** Look for the merchant’s name and location on store tokens. On patriotic tokens, look for specific motifs like the “Dove of Peace” or the “Star Spangled Banner.”
* **Reverse Design:** Many store tokens feature a “1¢” or “5¢” denomination, while others simply say “ONE CENT” or “FIVE CENTS.” The variety of reverses is staggering.
* **Grading Standards:** Because these were meant to be spent, they are heavily circulated. I prefer to grade them by the sharpness of the lettering and the presence of die cracks or clash damage. A clean, well-struck example with clear lettering will always command a premium over a heavily worn one.
### Merchant Tokens: The 19th-Century Scrip
While Hard Times and Civil War tokens are the most famous, the broader category of merchant tokens spans the entire 19th century. From the 1840s through the 1870s, thousands of merchants struck their own scrip to pay workers and customers.
These tokens range from simple advertising devices to elaborate med-like pieces. In my experience, the most desirable merchant tokens are those that tell a story. A token featuring a prominent local politician or a famous local event adds immense historical value.
**Key Varieties and Grading Markers:**
* **Obverses:** Typically feature the merchant’s name, location, and sometimes a portrait or symbol.
* **Reverses:** Often feature the denomination (e.g., “½ DOL” for half dollar), a motto, or a scene relevant to the merchant’s trade.
* **Metallurgy:** Again, bronze and copper dominate, but some merchants used silver or gold for special occasions.
* **Authentication:** Unlike official coinage, there was no centralized mint to certify these. Collectors must rely on weight, diameter, and the distinct die characteristics of known rarities.
### Historical Counterfeits: The Dark Side of Certification
Now, let us pivot to a darker aspect of our hobby: historical counterfeits. The forum discussion touched on this when one user noted, “The certificate of authenticity looks so shady that it brings doubt to the coin.”
In the world of exonumia, counterfeiting is not just about making fake coins; it is about making fake certifications. The forum thread revealed a retailer selling “certified” coins with aftermarket COAs—essentially wrapping a circulated coin in expensive paper and calling it a premium investment. This is the antitade of true numismatic authentication.
However, the history of counterfeiting is much older and more sophisticated. During the 19th century, counterfeiters routinely forged official UM issues, and some even managed to get fake “Certificates of Genuineness” signed by corrupt Mint officials, much like Snowden’s infamous 1887 affidavit for the 1804 dollar.
When I evaluate potential counterfeits or aftermarket COAs, I always employ the following red flags:
1. **Absence of Date/Mintmark:** If a “coin” lacks identifying details, it is not a coin; it is a token or a med.
2. **Paper Quality:** Modern aftermarket COAs are often printed on standard copy paper. Genuine historical documents are usually rag-based or linen.
3. **Weight and Composition:** A genuine 1804 dollar weighs 4.44 grams. A modern “silver” dime wrapper weighs exactly 2.5 grams. If the physical object doesn’t match the claimed metal content, the COA is useless.
### Actionable Takeaways for the Exonumia Collector
Based on my years of navigating the secondary market and examining these fascinating pieces, here is my advice for buyers and sellers:
* **Ignore the Paper, Respect the Metal:** Do not pay for a Certificate of Authenticity from a retailer. The paper is worth less than the ink it is printed on. The value is in the metal, the strike, and the historical context.
* **Look for the Missing Details:** A true collector cares about the date and mintmark. If a piece of unofficial currency lacks these identifiers, it is an exonumia piece, and its value should be assessed accordingly.
* **Verify the Metallurgy:** Always test the metal composition. Bronze Hard Times tokens should weigh around 4 to 5 grams. Silver Civil War tokens weigh significantly more. Never assume a piece is silver just because of a sticker.
* **Check for Die Characteristics:** When buying Civil War tokens or merchant tokens, look for die cracks, die polish, and die rust. These are the fingerprints of the engraver and help authenticate the piece.
* **Beware of Bullion Pricing Traots:** Just as the forum user pointed out, sellers will wrap a cheap copper token in a $5 bill and claim it’s a rare silver piece. Always check the melt value against the retail price.
### Conclusion: The Unofficial Money is the Real History
The unofficial money is more interesting than the official issues. Hard Times tokens, Civil War tokens, and merchant tokens do not just sit in a museum; they tell the story of a nation struggling through panic, war, and industrialization. They were the “certified” money of their time, trusted by the public because the alternative was economic collapse.
As we saw in that forum discussion, the modern market is flooded with “certified” coins wrapped in misleading paper. But true exonumia collectors know the truth. The value of a token lies not in a piece of cardboard, but in the metal, the history, and the story it tells. When you look beyond the official Mint, you find the real heartbeat of American commerce—and it is a heartbeat worth collecting.
