Been Awhile for Silver: My Coin Roll Hunting Discoveries and Insights
June 7, 2025My Feline-Inspired Coin Roll Hunting Adventure: Unexpected Treasures
June 7, 2025As a longtime coin collector, I’ve been hooked on the buzz about W quarters since they first started showing up in change. That little ‘W’ mint mark from West Point has turned my usual collecting into a real treasure hunt, and I’ve picked up a few tricks along the way that I’d love to share with fellow enthusiasts.
What Makes W Quarters So Special
W quarters are a real rarity in modern U.S. coins. They were only made in 2019 and 2020 for the America the Beautiful series. Each design had just 2 million minted — way fewer than the billions of regular quarters. That scarcity, plus the fact they come from the West Point Mint, makes them special. Finding one in your change feels like a real win!
Practical Tips for Finding W Quarters
In my book, Coin Roll Hunting (CRH) is still the best way to find these. I’ve spent hours going through bank rolls, and that moment when you see the ‘W’ on the back? Pure adrenaline. Here’s what I’ve found works:
- Get fresh rolls from your bank — ask for uncirculated quarters to boost your chances of finding one that’s still in great shape
- Always check your change! I once got a W quarter back at a coffee shop, so they’re definitely still circulating
- Patience is key. I’ve had my share of dry spells, but that just makes the next find even sweeter
Lately, I’ve seen more W quarters showing wear, especially on the raised parts of the design. So when you find one, treat it gently to keep it looking good.
Grading and Value Insights
Once you’ve got a W quarter, grading it will tell you what it’s worth. I always check mine under a bright light, looking for scratches, dings, or rim dents — especially on Washington’s portrait and the main design. Here’s how I handle it:
- Coins graded MS-65 or higher are the ones that bring top dollar. They’ll have very little wear and plenty of shine
- If you find one that looks almost perfect, getting it professionally graded by PCGS or NGC can really pay off. Top-grade W quarters can command serious money
- Watch the market. These coins are still in demand because they’re so rare, but prices can change depending on condition and which design it is
Chasing W quarters has shown me that sticking with it really does work in coin collecting. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been at it for years, the hunt is part of the fun. It’s one of the things that makes this hobby so rewarding — and exciting!
