The Science of Toning and Oxidation
Natural toning occurs when silver and copper coins react with airborne sulfur compounds, creating breathtaking hues ranging from soft gold to electric rainbows. While collectors prize attractive toning for its character, uncontrolled oxidation can obscure details and slash a coin’s collectibility.
