Chasing My White Whales: A Numismatist’s Journey Through Elusive Coins
June 6, 2025Beware of That BS eBay Coin Seller! (ツ)
June 6, 2025Tokens have always held a special charm for me – these little metal storytellers that capture history in your palm. Today I’m excited to share some personal favorites from my collection that keep my collecting passion burning bright.
Quirky and Diverse Token Highlights
What I love most about tokens is how they defy expectations. Take that anniversary piece I found commemorating a 24th year – who celebrates 24 years? It’s wonderfully odd! Then there’s my doubled die token where the extra ghosting gives it such character. But my heart really belongs to this fragile 130-year-old cardboard ticket repurposed by a strawberry farmer. Holding something so ephemeral feels like touching history itself. Of course, I’ve learned the hard way about fakes – that Lillie’s Saloon token that got my hopes up before revealing itself as a reproduction taught me to always double-check!
Canadian Numismatic Treasures
Canadian tokens have become a real obsession for me. My 1984 Hamilton convention token is a beauty – practically untouched after all these years. And the Habitant token? That French-Canadian farmer always makes me chuckle – he looks downright chilly in that Quebec winter scene! Its “Concordia Salus” motto ties back beautifully to Montreal’s heritage and the Bank of Montreal’s roots. It’s wild to think these semi-regal pieces circulated for over six decades. Then there’s my well-loved 1837 Bank of Lower Canada token – worn smooth from use, but you can feel the history in that 2 sous/penny piece.
Rarity and Market Observations
Watching token values shift has been fascinating. Take those “Good for a Scent” pieces – prices have shot up as collectors scramble for them. The salamander token is practically mythical with only 15 known – still hunting for one myself! For now, my lion press token adds some royal presence to the collection. When I’m evaluating pieces, I’ve found that scarcity and story together tell you more about value than either factor alone.
Practical Collecting Tips
Here’s what I’ve learned that might help your own collecting journey:
- Condition matters: My 1984 convention token shows how pristine pieces hold value – always check for wear
- Dig into the story: Knowing the background of pieces like the Habitant token makes them come alive
- Photo documentation: I just finished photographing my latest batch – it’s invaluable for organizing and sharing finds
- Watch for fakes: That Lillie’s Saloon lesson stays with me – always verify!
This token hunt never gets old – every find feels like unwrapping a mystery. I’d be thrilled to hear about your own token adventures and discoveries!
