August 22, 2026I’ve handled enough estate coins to know how these stories end. A treasured piece goes into a drawer, a well-meaning relative finds it decades later, and one afternoon with a polishing cloth quietly erases half its numismatic value. Here’s how to make sure yours never becomes that story.
Recently, a collector shared a story I hear far too often. He inherited an 1805 Draped Bust Half Dollar from his grandfather back when he was barely a teenager. Through childhood, it sat safe in a drawer. It survived move after move. Then, as an adult rediscovering the hobby, he sent it off to PCGS — hopeful, proud, certain of good news. The result came back: Genuine XF Details, Code 92 — Cleaned. Ouch doesn’t begin to cover it.
The heartbreak wasn’t just emotional. It was financial. A straight-graded XF40 example of this date carries a price guide value of roughly $2,650. His coin, despite wearing the detail of an Extremely Fine piece, would realistically bring somewhere between $900 and $1,400 at auction. Half the value — gone. Not to wear. Not to mishandling. To someone, sometime in the last two centuries, deciding the coin needed a bath.
