PCGS’s New Membership Tiers and Holder: Why Eliasberg, Pogue, and Provenance Command Premium Prices
October 2, 2026Tangible assets are making a comeback, and I have seen renewed interest from wealth managers and their high-net-worth clients in coins. The appeal is clear: direct ownership, a tangible link to history, and a market very different from stocks and bonds. I am enthusiastic, but not naive. The strongest portfolios are not built by buying attractive coins and placing them in a safe. I bring the same discipline I would use with real estate, fine art, or private equity: authenticate the asset, measure its liquidity, and identify what supports lasting numismatic value. Mint condition matters, but it is only the beginning. Is this a genuine rare variety? Does the strike show strength, does the luster have life, and does the patina appear natural? Is the provenance documented? Will the eye appeal and collectibility still attract buyers beyond the seller’s booth? PCGS’s new submission tiers and holder can support that work, but they are tools—not guarantees. Before I recommend a coin to a client, I want to know exactly what it is, how it was authenticated, and whether it could be sold quickly at a fair market price. Get those answers right, and coins can add genuine diversification. Miss them, and a “tangible asset” can become an expensive collectible with no clear exit.
