The Science of the Strike: Alloy, Flow Lines, and Stefanie Haydu’s Beloved Toners
September 26, 2026Some Coins Really Do Spend Centuries Underwater
Some coins have spent centuries sealed inside a shipwreck or hidden in masonry, soil, or a forgotten corner of an old home. The stories are irresistible: a steamship sunk in 1857, thousands of California gold coins buried in New York, and more than 1,400 gold pieces uncovered inside a wall in Texas.
When I appraise shipwreck and hoard treasure, I do not start with the headline value. I start with three harder questions. What is the coin? What condition is it in? And what evidence supports its claimed origin?
Those questions guide every coin associated with the S.S. Central America, the Redfield Hoard, and the Saddle Ridge Hoard. A shipwreck coin may have corrosion, deposits, scratches, or a history of conservation. A celebrated hoard may contain mostly common dates despite dramatic early reports. Provenance can add historical interest and numismatic value, but it cannot strengthen a weak strike, restore luster, or turn a circulated coin into one in mint condition.
I also want to acknowledge a numismatic community tribute to Stefanie Haydu, better known online as @coinsarefun. Friends remembered her love of toned coins, tokens, hard-times pieces, Ron Landis material, and the research behind unusual exonumia. The forum did not provide enough identification to connect the objects pictured in that thread to the three caches discussed here, so
